Actualog Expert Community

The Actualog Expert Community is a professional network of people who collaborate to build and maintain the Actualog Product Classifier — the shared foundation of categories and attributes that makes product data structured, comparable, and reusable across industries.

Actualog is designed so you can contribute as:

• an independent expert (not tied to any company workspace),
• a company professional (manufacturer, buyer, distributor, integrator),
• a representative of an association, university, lab, or standards body.

You can work in Actualog even without being an employee of a company. Company membership expands what you can do operationally (workspaces, catalogs, imports), but expert contribution and collaboration is not limited to company employees.

What the Expert Community does

Experts collaborate on the shared “language” of product data:

• Create and maintain product categories (the taxonomy / classifier).
• Define and refine attributes (characteristics, units, controlled values, required fields).
• Improve terminology and multilingual naming (names, descriptions, synonyms).
• Support data quality by making category templates complete, consistent, and practical for real-world products.
• Enable standardization by converging on consistent definitions that can be reused across suppliers and customers.
• Support standard products and reusable product records when your domain benefits from shared baselines and reference profiles.

This work reduces duplicates, makes products comparable, and turns product information into something that can be trusted for procurement, engineering selection, publishing, and integrations.

Who can be an expert

We welcome:

• independent professionals with deep domain knowledge,
• engineers, designers, procurement specialists,
• manufacturers and suppliers,
• distributors and solution providers,
• researchers and educators,
• industry associations and communities.

If you can help define “what a product is” and “how it should be described”, you can contribute.

How expert work fits into Actualog

Actualog is built on collaboration and reuse:

• Communities are industry spaces where shared structures and discoverability are organized.
• The Classifier (categories + attributes) is the shared backbone used by companies and professionals.
• Companies publish products and catalogs using this shared structure, and benefit from higher quality and interoperability.

Expert collaboration is how Actualog stays accurate as technologies evolve.

How to get started as an expert

1) Create your account and complete your profile

A professional network works only when people can trust the identity and expertise of contributors.

• Use your real name (or professional name your organization recognizes).
• Add a clear “About” statement: your domain, what you work with, what you can contribute.
• Add facets/tags to make yourself discoverable to colleagues in your domain.

2) Choose communities relevant to your domain

Communities help you focus on the industries where you can contribute the most.

Start small (2–5 communities), then expand later.

3) Learn the core concepts (minimum set)

Before editing, make sure you understand:

• Category (and parent/subcategory),
• Attribute (typed characteristic, required vs optional),
• Templates / category rules (what attributes are allowed/required),
• Facets (discovery tags and filtering),
• Standard products / reusable profiles (when applicable in your domain),
• Data Assets (documents and media that support correctness).

4) Start by improving existing structures

The best first contributions are usually:

• add missing synonyms (especially common abbreviations),
• clarify descriptions (what the category includes/excludes),
• fix attribute naming (engineering terms, standard vocabulary),
• add missing required attributes that make products comparable,
• suggest controlled values where free text causes inconsistency.

5) Collaborate openly

Use discussions and comments to explain:

• why you propose a change,
• what standard or industry practice it aligns with,
• how it improves data quality and interoperability.

Actualog is designed for teamwork — governance works best when changes are transparent and reviewable.

6) Apply to become an expert for a specific community (when ready)

After you’ve gained experience contributing and understand the rules and structure, you can request expert status in a specific community (where applicable). Expert privileges may include additional governance tools and responsibilities.

Working as an independent expert (no company required)

You can contribute without joining any company workspace:

• participate in communities,
• help evolve category and attribute definitions,
• collaborate on data quality and terminology,
• build your professional reputation through visible contributions.

If later you join a company workspace (as an employee or partner), your expertise immediately translates into faster product onboarding, better catalogs, and higher data quality inside that organization.

• contribute reliable, factual information,
• avoid misleading claims about products or standards,
• do not use community discussions for advertising,
• keep collaboration respectful and focused on improving product knowledge.

Finding colleagues and collaborating

To find other experts:

• open a community and use the Experts list,
• use facets/tags to discover people by specialty,
• follow categories/products you care about to stay updated,
• invite colleagues into a company workspace when you need operational collaboration (catalogs, imports, publishing).

Why the Expert Community matters

Industrial product data becomes valuable only when it is:

• consistent (same rules, same terminology),
• complete (mandatory specs are present),
• comparable (units and types are governed),
• reusable (works across catalogs and integrations).
